Digital Intelligence (DQ)

DQ (Digital Intelligence) is a comprehensive framework for digital literacy, skills, and readiness.

It includes cognitive, emotional, and social abilities that empower users to navigate digital life safely, responsibly, and ethically.

Designed for Global Use

The DQ framework was created in partnership with the World Economic Forum, OECD, and IEEE and is adaptable to various national standards, cultures, and education systems. It provides a roadmap for policymakers, educators, tech companies, and parents to foster ethical digital citizens. It is based on empirical studies in over 30 countries and promotes age-appropriate milestones and developmental benchmarks for digital literacy.

8 Core Areas

8 Core Areas of Digital Citizenship (The DQ Framework):

  1. Digital Identity: Understanding and managing your digital persona.

  2. Digital Use: Healthy tech balance (avoiding overuse).

  3. Digital Safety: Managing cyber risks (e.g., cyberbullying, scams).

  4. Digital Security: Protecting privacy and data.

  5. Digital Emotional Intelligence: Empathy, managing emotions online.

  6. Digital Communication: Respectful and effective online interaction.

  7. Digital Literacy: Understanding digital media and AI.

  8. Digital Rights: Awareness of digital laws and responsibilities.

A Paradigm Shift

  • Digital well-being isn’t about screen time but about how we live in a “phygital” (physical + digital) world.

  • True digital citizenship requires cultivating digital ethics, agency, and civic responsibility.

  • The goal is empowerment, not control.

Metacognition & Reflective Learning Connection

To implement DQ meaningfully in schools, students must go beyond digital skill drills. They need:

  • Metacognitive strategies to reflect on how, why, and when they use digital tools.

  • Critical thinking routines to evaluate AI-generated content and their own digital behavior.

  • Opportunities to self-assess their digital decisions, not just comply with rules.

Teaching DQ = Teaching Reflection

The most powerful classrooms combine ethical tech use, reflective learning, and student agency — exactly what the DQ Framework advocates. Mrs. M's classes include all three elements.
